Special Details About This Meeting/Audience:

From System Administration to Systems Engineering

We’ve reached a point where the component parts of our software—technical, social, and organizational—exceed our ability to control their complexity. As our systems grow increasingly large and distributed, Velocity helps you develop ways to build, manage, and continually adapt to this new reality.

The O’Reilly Velocity Conference: New direction for 2017

We have begun to accept that failure is inevitable in these distributed systems and adopt new strategies, tactics, tools, and approaches to deal with that acceptance. Our industry is evolving rapidly, and we are adjusting the trajectory of Velocity to reflect this fundamental shift. We’re moving from our original focus on web performance and operations towards a more inclusive distributed systems stack spanning the application layer all the way down through compute, storage, networking, to the data center (whether yours is in the cloud or not). This extends Velocity’s scope into new domains, expanding our focus on performance and operations from the bottom of the stack right up to the customer.

In 2017 we plan to have more opinionated, deeper-dive tracks. We invite proposals from system engineers, architects, developers, system administrators, operations managers, site reliability engineers, and more—people on the front lines with stories of great success and worthy failures, especially if they provide clear ideas for what to do next. And while people need a sense of what’s possible, bring concrete technical solutions above all else.
